As Utah’s Bicycle Lawyers, people often ask us what we love about cycling. Like many cyclists, we have a hard time answering that question. We love riding through the beautiful scenery of Utah. We love riding with friends and participating in races. But, one of the things we love most about cycling is that it keeps us fit. We regularly experience the many health benefits of cycling. Many people want to find fun and engaging ways to work out, and we say: try cycling! In this post, we identify some of the ways in which riding can keep you healthy.
The Many Health Benefits of Cycling
While there are many ways in which cycling keeps you healthy, we want to focus on some of the most basic. Cycling can help different people in different ways, so we encourage you to try it out and see what benefits it offers you! The common health benefits of cycling include:
- Increased Heart Health
The American Heart Association says that cycling can be an effective way of preventing heart disease and stroke. According to the AHA, 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise can help improve heart health. That means one or two rides each week can make a huge difference. Cycling is also a great aerobic exercise, which means it may help lower blood pressure.
- Burn Fat and Build Muscle
Along with a healthy diet, cycling can help you lose weight. Aerobic exercise is a great way to burn calories. Combing a cycling routine with a low-fat, high-protein diet can help you shed excess fat and build strong, powerful muscle.
- Build Brainpower
Studies show that aerobic exercise can improve mental health and function. You only need to exercise for up to 30 minutes a few times each week to see an improvement. So, as we mentioned before, one or two rides per week can be very beneficial.
- Lighten Your Mood
Exercises like cycling can increase the amount of endorphins and other chemicals in your body and brain that promote feelings of contentment and relaxation. So, you won’t just be proud of yourself after cycling — you may actually feel better.
These are just some of the ways in which cycling (and exercise in general) can boost your health. If you have a personal story about the health benefits of cycling, leave a comment and let us know!
